In 1926, the federal government acted to create a continuous paved highway from Chicago to Los Angeles…thus Route 66 was born. Much has changed since then, but 80 years later this famous highway still meanders through the heart of Joplin and you can find old and new fun things to do all along the way..

These two films follow the footsteps of 1965 marchers from Selma to Montgomery. The first fils is a presentation of the National Park Service & Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail. (20 minutes) The second film is a spiritual take on the Selma voting rights marches of 1965 from some of its unsung foot soldiers-Catholic nuns. Never before in American history had avowed Catholic women made so public a political statement. (60 minutes)

The night sky is the largest natural resource at George Washington Carver National Monument. Learn about celestial navigation and the underground railroad, star stories, and the effects of light pollution. This 30-minute long slide show will be followed by an outside constellation tour. This story of two sisters who cast wistful glances back at their lives, but still believe in hope and love, earned an Academy Award Nomination for Best Foreign Film in 1974.

Andrzej Wajda, one of the finest award winning directors, depicts a man’s search for meaning in the midst of brutality. Set in Warsaw just before and during World War II, this is a profound psychological study of a man who accidentally kills a schoolmate and is imprisoned. Like many enslaved children, young George was separated from his mother and did not know any grandmothers or aunts. He relied on other women to provide for his care, training, and self-confidence. This program introduces several women important to George Washington Carver.

03/18 St. Patty’s Revenge Urban Adventure Race
  Carthage Memorial Hall

This race is in a different town in the 4-states every year, in 2012 it will be held in Carthage, MO. The course and checkpoint locations will be a secret until the pre-race meeting at 1:50 pm on race day when you will receive your team passport and clue sheet. There will be 8-10 checkpoints, which will take most teams 2-4 hrs to complete. The race is approximately 15 miles biking and 3 miles running. There will be challenges, mystery events, and other tasks that will be required for proper completion of the course. If you can do a 5k, ride 15 miles, and are looking for fun adventure, this is an event for you.

The Partnership for Environmental Education (PEEP) invites you to get your own PEEP Passport and listen for Spring Peepers, these small frogs singing in chorus early in springtime. The master visual poet Frantisek Vlacil created this emotional film of doomed love set after the wartime liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945. A returning airman is assigned to manage a manor once owner by a German family. There he is attracted to the daughter of a war criminal who is now reduced to servant status in the estate. But history works against them and he is caught between his love for the girl and his patriotic duty. It won Vlacil the Career Award at the Pilsen Festival.
