Boomtown Days began as the Festival of the Four States on Main Stree but was moved to its current home in Landreth Park in 2005 because it outgrew the Downtown location. The Festival now draws in over 45,000 people each year.

The night sky is the largest natural resource at George Washington Carver National Monument. Learn about celestial navigation and the underground railroad, star stories, and the effects of light pollution. This 30-minute long slide show will be followed by an outside constellation tour. Bring your heavy coats and boots as we explore the most brilliant constellations of the year in the wonders of the winter sky.

In this insightful drama, director Karoly Makk exhibits his extraordinary skills at drawing emotionally compelling performances from his talented leads. A widowed teacher living alone finds her quiet life and relationship with an old flame upset by a chance meeting with a woman she knew long ago. This story of two sisters who cast wistful glances back at their lives, but still believe in hope and love, earned an Academy Award Nomination for Best Foreign Film in 1974.

Like many enslaved children, young George was separated from his mother and did not know any grandmothers or aunts. He relied on other women to provide for his care, training, and self-confidence. This program introduces several women important to George Washington Carver.

03/18 St. Patty’s Revenge Urban Adventure Race
  Carthage Memorial Hall

This race is in a different town in the 4-states every year, in 2012 it will be held in Carthage, MO. The course and checkpoint locations will be a secret until the pre-race meeting at 1:50 pm on race day when you will receive your team passport and clue sheet. There will be 8-10 checkpoints, which will take most teams 2-4 hrs to complete. The race is approximately 15 miles biking and 3 miles running. There will be challenges, mystery events, and other tasks that will be required for proper completion of the course. If you can do a 5k, ride 15 miles, and are looking for fun adventure, this is an event for you.

  Adelheid (Czechoslovakia, 1969)

The master visual poet Frantisek Vlacil created this emotional film of doomed love set after the wartime liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945. A returning airman is assigned to manage a manor once owner by a German family. There he is attracted to the daughter of a war criminal who is now reduced to servant status in the estate. But history works against them and he is caught between his love for the girl and his patriotic duty. It won Vlacil the Career Award at the Pilsen Festival.

04/10 MSSU Presents an International Film Festival
  Border Street (Ulica Graniczna) (Poland, 1948)

Based on the circumstances surrounding the Warsaw Ghetto uprising of 1943, this authentic recreation follows a small, heroic band of Jews who chose to die fighting rather than face deportation to Auschwitz or Treblinka. It reveals the plight of an old tailor and a doctor who try to save his daughter and others. Aleksander Ford’s film is at once a compelling drama and a page out of history. It was a prize winner at the 1948 Venice Festival and is recognized as one of the best Polish films of the postwar period.
